Years ago when I was doing a corporate video in the Bahamas I stumbled across this amazing lighthouse on the island of Saint Salvador. This lighthouse was one of the last hand cranked kerosene powered light houses in the world which would have been fascinating enough, but there were two lighthouse keepers that every two hours had to take turns walking up to the top of the Lighthouse and hand cranking a chain up to the top which would then rotate the Lighthouse as a weight went back down to the ground.
One of the Lighthouse keepers was this maverick guy who was more interested in playing the keyboard and fishing then really working the Lighthouse and the other was a lady on the verge pf retirement. They couldn't have been more different characters. While I was on the island I shot some footage. Isiah Lightfoot, the male lighthouse keeper was actually on holiday for the week leaving Joyce to work the lighthouse by herself
It was a really amazing story, but years ago the camera I had could not cope with the incredibly low light of a pitch-black remote Bahamas Island and the lighthouse really gave off a very small amount of light due to it being kerosene powered.
I always wanted to go back and fix the footage for this and make a film which I think is truly wonderful and finally the technology with AI allowed me to fix a lot of the shots that did not work and to create an AI overlay for some shots showing the emotion of the characters and even to create brand new visual effects.
You can see the film below with also a comparison video sharing the original footage and the cleaned-up AI material.
This is an example of how Cambridge Vision uses AI technologies for not only new material but also going back and making older footage better.
